Jewel of Arabia
OMAN: JEWEL OF ARABIA
Building upon the long-standing ties between the Sultanate of Oman and the United Kingdom, the expedition project “Oman: The Jewel of Arabia” has been officially launched under the distinguished patronage of His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Sultanate of Oman, and Prince William, Prince of Wales.
Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) is the official Sustainability Partner for the expedition that is set to follow the route taken by Bertram Thomas from Ras al Hadd, the most easterly point of the Arab world, along the coast to Salalah.

The Royal Geographical Society’s Jewel of Arabia expedition aims to shine a spotlight on the journey by Bertram Thomas. The British civil servant served as Finance Minister and Wazir to Sultan Taimur Al Said, as well as ruling Muscat and Oman for seven years from 1925, and made several journeys into the desert. The 30-day journey on foot, camels and four-wheel drive vehicles in January 2025 will retrace the incredible 1928 journey.
The project aims to highlight the cultural and natural heritage of the Sultanate of Oman and raise global awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability issues.
The journey will be documented through the publication of a book and promotional materials that highlight the experience and open up new vistas for tourism and cultural cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and the world. Passing through or close to many of Oman's biodiversity hotspots, the expedition will bring to light the inspiring people and amazing places, the young Omani's working in the green arena and Oman's transition to becoming a sustainable global green energy hub.
Combining traditional and modern means of transportation the journey will bring together Omani youth and British travel enthusiasts in a unique cultural exchange.
