OSW Q&A SERIES

Eng. Said Mohammed Al Masoudi

Chief Executive Officer,

Sohar Aluminium

Briefly introduce your organization and your role in sustainability, environment, water, or clean energy.

Sohar Aluminium has clearly embedded sustainability within its Vision, Values, and corporate Strategy. ESG principles are not treated as a parallel function; they are integrated across our business objectives, governance structure, and operational decision-making. Through the implementation of our ESG Strategy, we drive sustainable growth while ensuring environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and strong governance remain central to how we operate.

Building on this foundation, Sohar Aluminium is guided operationally by its EHS goal of zero harm, embedding sustainability into every stage of its activities. Energy efficiency, emissions management, recycling, waste reduction, and responsible water stewardship are integrated into one performance-driven approach. This is reinforced by continuous GHG monitoring through an in-house calculation tool aligned with global best practices, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and accountability.

We are also advancing circularity by increasing the use of external scrap recycling, which saves up to 95% of the energy required for primary aluminium production. Through strict application of the waste hierarchy and by eliminating reliance on potable water — using treated well water, seawater for cooling, repurposed demineralised water, and treated sewage water — we systematically reduce our environmental footprint while strengthening operational resilience and resource efficiency.

What sustainability challenge in Oman or the region needs urgent attention today?

Climate resilience represents the most pressing sustainability priority for Oman and the wider region today.

The region operates within a climate-sensitive environment where rising temperatures, water scarcity, and resource pressures are intensifying. These conditions influence infrastructure durability, energy systems, industrial operations, and community wellbeing. Strengthening adaptive capacity through resilient planning, efficient resource management, and long-term infrastructure investment is therefore essential to maintaining stability and sustainable growth.

At the same time, the global economic landscape is evolving. Shifting regulatory frameworks, investor expectations, and growing demand for responsibly produced materials are redefining competitiveness. For resource- and energy-intensive economies, this transformation presents both complexity and opportunity, encouraging innovation, efficiency improvements, and greater integration of sustainability into core business strategies.

Addressing this challenge requires coordinated public–private collaboration, technological advancement, and a continued focus on operational excellence. Enhancing energy efficiency, advancing circular economy practices, and strengthening water stewardship are practical pathways that support both environmental performance and economic resilience.

Ultimately, climate resilience is not solely an environmental consideration; it is a strategic priority that underpins long-term competitiveness, diversification, and sustainable prosperity across the region.

How is your organization contributing towards Net Zero, decarbonization, or circular economy goals according Net Zero emission 2050 and Oman Vision 2040?

Sohar Aluminium is aligned with Oman’s Net Zero ambitions and has implemented several energy efficiency initiatives to optimise energy utilisation across its facilities. The company has integrated aluminium scrap recycling, that reduces energy use by 95% compared to primary production, with a long-term plan to further expand scrap utilisation. Resource efficiency is embedded across operations, ensuring materials are reused and recycled, most waste streams are processed, and landfill disposal is minimised. To strengthen the aluminium recycling industry in Oman, Sohar Aluminium conducted an Aluminium Recycling Forum over the past two years and is preparing its third edition in 2026, bringing together recyclers, collectors, regulators, and end users to address challenges and explore opportunities. In parallel, the company continues to explore opportunities to integrate renewable energy.
