Dr. Mohab Ali Al-Hinai
VP - Sustainability and Circular Economy,
be'ah

Briefly introduce your organization and your role in sustainability, environment, water, or clean energy.
Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) was established in 2007 to support a cohesive plan laid out in a National Strategy Report in 2006 to promote proper waste management practices. This includes the effective use of resources, development of adequate infrastructure and implementation of sustainable goals to make a lasting impact on the country’s future.
be’ah is committed to achieving a circular economy business model in a sustainable manner. This commitment is exemplified throughout the company’s operations, as well as its consistent communication with stakeholder groups at multiple levels to promote circular economy through capacity building and raising awareness in society at large, and the communities that it operates within including academia, Omani-owned SMEs, entrepreneurs, as well as engaging with international partners that bring global experience and innovation.
be'ah has recently launched several sustainable initiatives aimed at advancing its sustainability strategy and shaping the future of resource management. Key initiatives include comprehensive studies on the impacts of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and the promotion of a circular economy. These efforts are aligned with Oman Vision 2040 and the nation’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
What sustainability challenge in Oman or the region needs urgent attention today?
One of the most critical sustainability challenges in Oman is managing increasing climate and resource pressures - particularly water scarcity and greenhouse gas emissions - while maintaining long-term economic resilience. These pressures are already affecting infrastructure performance, environmental quality, and operational efficiency, requiring timely and coordinated action.
Closely linked to this is the urgent need to accelerate the transition from a linear to a circular economy, especially in waste and material management, to reduce emissions, conserve resources, and unlock long-term environmental and economic value.
Enabling progress across these areas remains closely tied to the availability of effective and sustainable financing mechanisms, as mobilizing timely investment is essential to scale solutions, implement resilient infrastructure, and translate sustainability strategies into tangible outcomes.
How is your organization contributing towards Net Zero, decarbonization, or circular economy goals according Net Zero emission 2050 and Oman Vision 2040?
Our commitment to Oman’s Net Zero 2050 target remains steadfast. Through strategic initiatives such as Waste-to-Energy, Biogas production, and Refuse-Derived Fuel, we will be driving significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while optimizing resource efficiency. Internally, our Circularity Assessment Project lays the groundwork for a robust circular economy roadmap, ensuring our long-term sustainability goals are both ambitious and achievable.
Our efforts continue to support Oman’s Net Zero 2050 target through the advancement of emission reduction and energy recovery initiatives. Our major landfills Barka and Al Multaqa, certified by the Verified Carbon Standard (Verra), successfully generated over 67.7K Verified Carbon Units. In addition, Waste-to-Energy, Biogas, and Refuse-Derived Fuel contribute to advancing energy recovery solutions, reflecting tangible progress in emission reductions.
In collaboration with key stakeholders, be’ah is conducting a feasibility study to identify and quantify sources of biogenic CO2. This project aims to explore innovative solutions for capturing, storing, and utilizing CO2, contributing to Oman’s Net Zero 2050 goals. The outcomes of this project are expected to support renewable energy initiatives and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
What innovation, technology, or solution are you showcasing at OSW 2026?
During Oman Sustainability Week (OSW), be'ah will showcase a range of innovative and eco-friendly initiatives that reflect its leadership in sustainability and circular economy practices. Among the key highlights is be'ah's role in hosting the Oman Sustainability Week Awards and the International Sustainable Resources and Technology Conference (ISRTC). These events emphasize the company's commitment to advancing sustainable practices and fostering collaboration across industries to drive the circular economy forward.
be'ah will also present its award-winning mobile education unit. This initiative reflects the company’s dedication to educating the public on sustainability principles, particularly the concepts of reduce, reuse, and recycle. The mobile unit serves as an interactive platform to engage attendees and raise awareness of environmental stewardship.
Additionally, the OSW Awards are built on the Oman Sustainability Index, which measures organizations' performance in key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. The index offers organizations a valuable tool for assessing their sustainability initiatives while encouraging the integration of responsible, ethical practices into their overall business strategies. Developed in collaboration with the Center for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE) in Chicago, the index follows internationally recognized Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, ensuring robust and transparent evaluation processes. These innovations will not only highlight be'ah’s commitment to sustainability but also inspire industry-wide adoption of sustainable practices across Oman and beyond.
