Muscat, Oman – October 2026: Oman’s expanding renewable energy sector could play a significant role in supporting the Sultanate’s artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions, as growing demand for data centres and digital infrastructure highlights the importance of reliable, sustainable electricity.
Dr Nasser Al Rizeiqi, Sustainability Expert at the Oman Net Zero Centre, has emphasised the need for greater coordination between clean energy development and the country’s emerging AI ecosystem. Oman’s investments in renewable power, telecommunications and digital infrastructure provide a foundation for building an energy-efficient digital economy.
Several initiatives are contributing to this transformation, including the Oman Digital Triangle, the AI Special Economic Zone, Otech’s sovereign cloud and AI developments, and O-Green’s renewable energy projects.
Among the major developments is O-Green’s Continuous Renewable Energy Project in Duqm and Mahout, which combines 2.7 GW of solar, wind and battery storage capacity to deliver 770 MW of reliable electricity. The company is also targeting 200 MW of AI-ready data centre capacity by 2028, reflecting the growing potential to integrate renewable energy generation with advanced computing infrastructure.
As AI technologies and hyperscale data centres increase global electricity demand, access to competitively priced, low-carbon energy is becoming an important consideration for technology investors. Oman’s abundant solar and wind resources could strengthen its position as an attractive destination for sustainable digital infrastructure investments.
To capitalise on these opportunities, Al Rizeiqi has called for coordinated planning between government authorities, energy developers and technology operators. Key considerations include securing reliable electricity supplies for large data centres, establishing measurable energy and water efficiency standards, and encouraging long-term renewable power purchase agreements.
Developing national AI capabilities, supporting technology startups and strengthening local expertise will also be essential to ensuring that investments contribute to long-term economic diversification and innovation.
By aligning renewable energy expansion with its digital transformation agenda, Oman has an opportunity to develop a competitive, sustainable AI ecosystem while advancing the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
