Oman is demonstrating remarkable progress in its renewable energy ambitions, underpinned by tangible developments in solar and wind capacity. In the first five months of 2025 alone, the share of renewables in the nation’s electricity production has more than doubled, reflecting strategic execution aligned with Vision 2040 and net-zero commitments.

Recent data reveals that solar and wind projects contributed nearly 12% of Oman’s total electricity production between January and May 2025, compared to just 5% at the end of 2024. This growth trajectory has been fuelled by state-owned Nama Power and Water Procurement Company’s (PWP) generation of 1.88 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the period—almost equalling the total renewable output of 2.4 TWh recorded for the entire previous year.

Beyond energy output, this shift is yielding real environmental dividends. Nearly 90,000 homes are now powered by clean electricity, translating into annual emission reductions of over 617,000 tonnes. Such figures illustrate that Oman’s clean energy narrative is no longer confined to policy announcements but is being realised on the ground.

Looking ahead, Oman has set ambitious targets: 30–40% renewable share by 2030, scaling to 60–70% by 2040, and achieving 100% clean energy capacity by 2050. The pipeline to achieve these goals is robust. Five wind power projects with over 1 GW combined capacity are currently under tender, representing an investment exceeding $1.2 billion. Meanwhile, solar investments remain central to the strategy, with 4,500 MW of capacity planned over the next six years at an estimated $2.8 billion. The upcoming “Solar PV IPPs 2030” programme alone, with an estimated spend of $1–1.5 billion, aims for a capacity of 3 GW by early 2030.

These are not merely statistics. They represent Oman’s strategic positioning as a regional renewable energy leader, enabling economic diversification, energy security, and a pathway towards decarbonisation at scale. The consistency in project planning, tendering, and execution reflects Oman’s commitment to turning climate pledges into measurable outcomes, positioning the nation as a credible partner for global clean energy investment.
