Oman Sustainability Week Future Mobility launched to aid the Sultanate’s Eco Mobility Objectives

30 September 2023, Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology announced their partnership with CONNECT at the Green Mobility Forum in July 2023 to establish a cooperation to launch the Oman Sustainability Week Future Mobility. This event is scheduled to take place from 29 April to 1 May 2024, at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Center in Muscat, as an integral part of Oman Sustainability Week, a week-long series of events supporting national objectives.
In response to the pressing need to address carbon emissions, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology has initiated a dedicated effort to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation, communications, and information technology sectors. These sectors collectively contribute nearly 20 percent of the total carbon emissions in Oman. The nation's roadmap towards achieving Net Zero CO2 emissions by 2050 involves a strategic three-stage approach. The initial stage focuses on achieving a three percent reduction in emissions by 2030, followed by a more ambitious target of reducing emissions by 34 percent by 2040 in the second stage. The ultimate objective of completely eliminating emissions by 2050 is the third stage of this comprehensive plan. As part of this commitment, Oman aims to phase out conventional fuel-powered vehicles and introduce electric vehicles, with a goal of having electric vehicles constitute 79 percent of the total vehicles in the country by 2035.
On a global scale, the growing acceptance and demand for eco-friendly vehicles is reshaping the urban mobility landscape, driving the adoption of innovative solutions. Electric vehicles (EVs) and other alternate fuel vehicles are anticipated to play a significant role in achieving climate-neutral mobility objectives. Projections suggest that the number of EV and hybrid vehicles will reach 140 million by 2030. Notably, the sales of electric cars have surged over the past few years, increasing from around 4 percent in 2020 to 14 percent in 2022, with further growth expected throughout 2023. Several countries, including California, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, have outlined plans to prohibit the registration of internal combustion vehicles within the timeframe of 2025 to 2035.
With the aspiration of becoming Oman's most comprehensive mobility platform, Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) will introduce OSW Future Mobility, bolstering the nation's efforts to fulfill its commitment to achieve Net Zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
In addition to OSW Future Mobility, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology will introduce additional initiatives as part of Oman Sustainability Week to support the net zero transition. This includes the addition of a ‘eco mobility’ category as part of the OSW Awards, and eco mobility projects and operations as part of the OSW Site Visits programme.
Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) is Oman’s national event dedicated to future energy, power, water, waste, environment, and society, aligned with Oman Vision 2040 and the Sultanate's dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the aim of achieving Net Zero by 2050. The theme of OSW 2024 is ‘sustainability living in a circular society’.
OSW Future Mobility will serve as a platform for the mobility industry players to showcase the latest concepts, solutions, technologies, and innovations in eco mobility. By doing so, it will reinforce the nation's endeavor to create an economy with net zero emissions ahead of the curve.
The event will spotlight mobility sector innovators who are on the forefront of propelling sustainability, presenting cutting-edge technologies, digital solutions, data systems, smart infrastructure solutions, electric and hybrid vehicles and infrastructure, and complementary components that facilitate the sector's transformative journey.
Attendees will have the opportunity to explore emerging trends in clean mobility, engage with experts and thought leaders in the future mobility space, and gain valuable insights into the ever-evolving landscape of mobility.
Distinguished industry pioneers such as Asyad Group, Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah), bp, OQ, Oman LNG, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Shell Oman, SLB, Sohar Aluminium, and Veolia, among others, have already confirmed their participation at OSW.
