OQ’s participation as Strategic Partner in Oman Sustainability Week demonstrates its commitment to sustainable practices

As a global integrated energy company with its roots in Oman, OQ has integrated environmental conservation and sustainable development into its corporate strategy. Further attesting to this commitment, the company is currently participating in the ongoing Oman Sustainability Week (OSW). A national-level event dedicated to sustainability, OSW is being hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and is held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said who inaugurated the event on 14 March 2022 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.

As a keen advocate of sustainable development, through the event, OQ is focusing on achieving and delivering sustainability agenda based on three pillars which are environmental, social, economic and governance. Within 2022 focus on decarbonisation and in-country value (ICV).

Speaking about OQ’s participation, Mr. Ashraf Al Mamari, OQ's Chief Executive of People, Technology and Culture at OQ stated, “OSW is a promising platform for industry leaders who have embraced sustainability to come together and share meaningful insights to influence, empower and drive others to follow suit. Along with a number of ongoing sustainable initiatives which are being showcased at OSW, OQ is also highlighting its Alternative Energy (AE) business unit. AE is in strong alignment with Oman Vision 2040’s objective of renewable energy, diversified sources of energy and rationalized consumption to achieve energy security.”

Commenting further, he said, “Sustainability is one of our main pillars that form the heart of our operations, and we will continue to advocate this concept in the community to achieve prosperity and development in the country. At OQ, we also believe in setting new sustainability benchmarks in the industry to help realize Oman’s sustainability targets. Meanwhile, our focus on energy optimisation and efficiency will remain our top priority as we embark on the path of decarbonisation. OQ has started assessing its carbon footprint across all its assets and has been publishing this data since 2019 in its Sustainability Report. Committed to the energy transition, OQ has also established operations in upstream renewable energy, collaborated on electrical transmission, deployed downstream green molecule projects and leveraged existing trading strength.”

Speaking about Alternative Energy. Ms. Najla Al Jamali, OQ's CEO of Alternative Energy, who took part in the panel of speakers at the Gaia summit, offerd her insights on the plenary session titled “Current Landscape of Sustainability in Oman - Opportunities & Challenges to Moving the

Needle”. She will reflect on OQ’s pioneering role in sustainability and the opportunities it offers in the bigger business world.

As part of OQ’s participation in OSW and the accompanying ISRTC conference, Ms. Shaima Al Lawati will share her thoughts in the panel discussion titled “Paving the Path to Sustainability - A Regional Action Plan”, she will speak about OQ’s sustainability strategy and reporting. Meanwhile, at the panel discussion titled “Behavior Change and Social Innovation Through Communication - A Call for Collective Engagement”, Mr. Nasser Al Mamari, Head of Environment at OQ’s Downstream will be speaking about how OQ prioritizes the environment in all its projects and how this outlook is the cornerstone to achieving sustainable economic growth.

Recognising its continued commitment and efforts to achieve sustainability, OQ has received the Platinum Award at Oman Sustainability Week, which started March 14 until March 17th, 2022. OQ also won two awards under the categories of Environment and Society. These OSW awards aimed at recognising Omani companies with expectational contribution to sustainability practices in the Sultanate.

Realigning its business goals by empowering the community through sustained projects and initiatives to upheld OQ’s commitment to the environment and the community. The new framework strikes the right balance between satisfying its sustainability aspirations and meeting stakeholder expectations while adhering to global best practices. With a keen focus on health and education, economic prosperity and environmental stewardship, OQ has completed 8 projects, continuing its meaningful contribution to the socio-economic progress of the nation.
