China's accelerating hydrogen development strategy could create new opportunities for Oman to strengthen bilateral cooperation in clean energy, advanced manufacturing and industrial investment, supporting the Sultanate's ambitions to establish itself as a competitive green hydrogen hub.
The developments coincide with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's state visit to China, highlighting the potential to expand the two countries' longstanding energy partnership into emerging low-carbon industries.
China has introduced a four-year hydrogen development initiative covering five regional industrial clusters, backed by government incentives of up to $1.1 billion. The programme aims to stimulate hydrogen consumption across manufacturing, transportation and industrial applications while encouraging commercial adoption of cleaner energy technologies.
According to the Hydrogen Council's Global Hydrogen Compass 2026 report, global committed investment in clean hydrogen has reached $130 billion across more than 570 projects, representing approximately 6.9 million tonnes of annual production capacity.
However, the industry continues to face challenges in securing sufficient commercial demand, financing and long-term purchase agreements to support large-scale hydrogen projects.
For Oman, China's strategy presents opportunities beyond exporting green hydrogen. The Sultanate could attract Chinese investment into hydrogen-dependent industries, including low-emission steel production, chemicals and advanced manufacturing, creating domestic demand while supporting higher-value industrial exports.
Collaboration could also extend to hydrogen technologies, electrolyser manufacturing, infrastructure development and industrial supply chains, strengthening Oman's position within the global clean energy economy.
At the same time, China's expanding domestic hydrogen production capacity reinforces the importance of diversifying potential export markets and securing commercially viable international partnerships.
As Oman advances its green hydrogen ambitions under Oman Vision 2040, closer industrial cooperation with China could support technology transfer, investment diversification and the development of a more integrated hydrogen ecosystem.
The emerging opportunity for Oman lies not only in becoming a major hydrogen exporter, but in using clean hydrogen to develop competitive industries, attract investment and generate long-term economic value.
