Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals has introduced a new policy requiring institutions with high energy consumption to appoint qualified Omani professionals as Energy Efficiency Officers, strengthening the country's efforts to optimise energy use, reduce operational costs and advance its sustainability objectives.
Under the policy, designated officers will be responsible for monitoring electricity and energy consumption, evaluating usage patterns, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements and overseeing the implementation of energy-saving initiatives. Their responsibilities will also include assessing the effectiveness of these measures to support better resource management and operational performance.
The Oman Net Zero Centre will develop a regulatory framework outlining the policy's scope, implementation requirements and procedures.
Eng Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, emphasised the importance of integrating efficient energy consumption practices with the expansion of electricity generation and diversification of energy sources. He highlighted that effective demand management is essential to strengthening national energy security, improving resource utilisation and supporting sustainable economic development.
The minister also stressed that successful implementation would depend on institutional leadership incorporating energy efficiency into operational strategies and investment decisions. Beyond reducing energy expenditure, the policy is intended to improve organisational competitiveness and maximise the economic value derived from Oman's energy resources.
The initiative additionally seeks to strengthen national capabilities by developing specialised Omani expertise in energy management, while contributing to lower carbon emissions.
The policy supports the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and the Sultanate's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It forms part of wider government efforts to promote responsible energy consumption and sustainable resource management across economic sectors.
